Two $1,500 scholarships, awarded every year
The Coach Smith Scholarship was established in 2011 to recognize graduating Saline High School cross country athletes who have demonstrated academic and athletic success, teamwork, and commitment throughout their time in the program.
Each year, Friends of Saline Cross Country awards two $1,500 scholarships — one to a graduating member of the men’s team and one to a graduating member of the women’s team. Winners are announced at the end-of-season Awards Ceremony.
The scholarship honors Coach Smith, who directed the Saline Cross Country program for 39 years before retiring in 2016. Friends of Saline Cross Country manages and funds the scholarship through donations and proceeds from the Saline Merry Mile and Summerfest 5K.
A timeline of the Coach Smith legacy
- Coach Smith took the helm of Saline Cross Country, guiding the program for 39 years.
- 2011 — The Coach Smith Scholarship is created to recognize graduating seniors for academic and athletic success, teamwork, and commitment.
- 2016 — Coach Smith retires; Friends of Saline Cross Country is founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to continue supporting the program.
- Today — Two $1,500 scholarships are awarded annually, funded by donations and community races.
